Free birthday interview for kids

The same four questions.
A different little voice every birthday.

Before the candles or after the cake, sit down for a little birthday interview. Ask these four questions again each year. Their answers — and the way they say them — are the part you’ll want to keep.

No account, payment or child’s details needed.

Your birthday mini-interview

Start by saying their age and today’s date aloud.

  1. What’s your favourite thing in the whole world?
  2. What makes you laugh the most?
  3. What do you love doing with us?
  4. What would you like to learn next?

Ask all four each birthday, at their pace. Let them go off on a tangent. If they don’t fancy a question, skip it.

Copy and print work on your device. This page has no fields for names or answers and does not upload an interview.

Make it feel like a chat

Find a quiet moment and ask if they’re happy for you to record. Read one question, then give them time. “Tell me more” is usually enough; you don’t need to tidy up their answer or prompt a better one.

For younger children, you can shorten a question out loud: “What do you love?” or “What makes you laugh?” Keep the same four themes as they grow.

Next birthday, ask them again

Keep the questions together with this year’s recording or notes. Next year, record a fresh interview before playing the old one. Later, you can listen back to the changing favourites, little jokes and familiar phrases.

You can use a voice recorder you already have. Keeps is an option if you want the audio, a birthday photo and your own note in one private family journal.

See it in Keeps

Keep the sound, not just the words

After recording, choose Save audio to keep the voice itself. Add a caption such as ‘Birthday interview, age 5’ and the date, so you know what you’re listening to years later.
